WHETHER AS A RESULT OF UNDER EATING, FOOD SELECTION, POOR DIET PROGRAMMING OR OTHER FACTORS, FAR TOO MANY ATHLETES LACK THE ESSENTIAL VITAMINS AND MINERALS THEY REQUIRE. FOR THOSE THAT MAKE THE EXTRA EFFORT TO EMPHASIZE FOOD QUALITY, TIMING AND THE PROPER AMOUNTS, YET STILL FIND THEMSELVES IN A NUTRIENT DEFICIENT STATE, THIS CAN BE A CURIOUS POSITION. INTERESTINGLY, NUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES AREN’T ALWAYS A RESULT OF NOT CONSUMING ADEQUATE AMOUNTS. UNBEKNOWNST TO MANY, THERE ARE PROPERTIES OF SOME FOODS THAT CAN BLOCK YOUR BODY’S ABILITY TO ABSORB CERTAIN NUTRIENTS AND OTHERWISE CREATE DYSFUNCTION WITHIN THE BODY. TODAY, WE’RE GOING TO TAKE A NEW ANGLE ON ATTEMPTING TO SOLVE THE CHRONIC PROBLEM OF NUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES.#FOOD FRIDAY

IN RECENT YEARS, THE ADAGE “YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT” HAS CHANGED TO “YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT, DIGEST AND ABSORB”. IN A STATE OF BALANCE AND HEALTH, YOUR BODY WILL DO A MASTERFUL JOB OF ABSORBING 90% OR MORE OF THE NUTRIENTS FROM THE FOOD YOU INGEST. FOR A NUMBER OF REASONS THOUGH, THIS NUMBER CAN BE SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED. DAMAGE TO THE MICRO VILLI IN THE INTESTINAL BARRIER, ENZYME DEFICIENCIES, GENETIC PREDISPOSITIONS, FOOD INTOLERANCES AND SENSITIVITIES, STRESS, BIRTH DEFECTS AND EXPOSURE TO CHEMICALS CAN ALL POTENTIALLY REDUCE OUR ABILITY TO BREAK DOWN AND ASSIMILATE THE NUTRIENTS IN FOOD. ANOTHER SIGNIFICANT VARIABLE ARE PROPERTIES OF SOME FOODS CALLED ANTI-NUTRIENTS.

BY DEFINITION, AN ANTI-NUTRIENT IS “A NATURALLY-OCCURRING SUBSTANCE (SUCH AS SAPONIN, TANNIN, PHYTATES, OR OXALATES) FOUND IN PLANT-DERIVED FOODS THAT INTERFERES WITH ABSORPTION OR PROPER FUNCTIONING OF NUTRIENTS IN THE BODY”. INCLUDED WITHIN THIS SAME CATEGORY, ARE SUBSTANCES SUCH AS SUGAR WHICH REQUIRE THE USE OF MORE NUTRIENTS TO PROCESS THAN THEY SUPPLY SUCH AS WHITE SUGAR.

ANTI-NUTRIENTS MOSTLY HAVE THEIR EFFECT BY BONDING TO PROTEINS WITHIN THE NUTRIENTS OF FOOD AND IN SOME CASES BODY TISSUES. IN EITHER CASE, THIS PROHIBITS NUTRIENTS FROM BEING TAKEN UP INTO THE BLOODSTREAM THROUGH THE NATURAL PATHWAYS. THESE CHEMICALS EXIST IN VARIOUS PLANT FOODS AS A NATURAL MECHANISM FOR THE PLANT TO DEFEND ITSELF AND THRIVE IN NATURE. YES, INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH PLANTS HAVE THE ABILITY TO FIGHT BACK AGAINST CERTAIN ORGANISMS SUCH AS BUGS AND OTHER PESTS.

WHILE THE DEBATE WILL CONTINUE BETWEEN THOSE WITH COMPETING PERSPECTIVES ON ANTI-NUTRIENTS IN THE NUTRITION COMMUNITY, THE TRUTH IS WE AS HUMANS HAVE BEEN SURVIVING ON MANY OF THE FOODS CONTAINING ANTI-NUTRIENTS FOR SOME TIME. FOODS SUCH AS BROCCOLI, CAULIFLOWER, GREEN LEAFY VEGETABLES AND A VARIETY OF OTHERS WITH A CLEAR VALUE TO OUR BETTER HEALTH ALL CONTAIN SOME LEVEL OF ANTI-NUTRIENTS, BUT ALSO POSSESS A GREATER WEALTH OF NUTRIENTS WE REQUIRE. UNDOUBTEDLY, FOOD QUALITY SHOULD BE AT THE CENTER OF ANY WELL-PLANNED DIET. FOR THIS REASON, WE SHOULD CONSIDER THE VALUE PROPOSITION A FOOD HAS DELIVERS WHEN DECIDING WHETHER OR NOT TO CONSUME IT.  WITH AN UNDERSTANDING THAT OUR BODY’S AND FOOD PREPARATION METHODS CAN MOSTLY ERADICATE A GREAT MAJORITY OF THE NEGATIVE QUALITIES OF OUR FOOD, WE CAN CONSIDER THE POSITIVE ASPECTS OF THAT FOOD AS BEING A NET GAIN AND AN EFFECTIVE CONTRIBUTION TO OUR HEALTH. THEREFORE, HEALTHY INDIVIDUALS SHOULD NOT UNNECESSARILY FEAR THE ANTI-NUTRIENTS WITHIN MOST HEALTHY VEGETABLES.

CAUTION IS WARRANTED IN CERTAIN INSTANCES FOR THE ATHLETE HOWEVER. AGAIN FROM A VALUE PROPOSITION PERSPECTIVE, SOME FOODS AND FOOD BYPRODUCTS NEED TO BE EVALUATED EITHER TO SEE WHETHER OR NOT THEY ARE BRINGING REAL VALUE TO YOUR DIET, OR SIMPLY NOT. HERE ARE THREE SIGNIFICANT FOODS YOU SHOULD BE CLOSELY EVALUATING WHEN INCLUDING IN THEIR DIET PROGRAMMING.

GRAINS – FOR THOSE THAT HAVE A DIFFICULT TIME DIGESTING GRAIN-BASED PROTEINS SUCH AS GLUTEN (GLIADIN, GLUTENIN) OR AVENIN OF OATS IT’S A CLEAR CHOICE TO AVOID THEM ALTOGETHER. THESE SUBSTANCES CAN WREAK HAVOC ON YOUR INTESTINAL BARRIER AND ELICIT AUTO-IMMUNE CONDITIONS IN UPWARDS OF 40% OF THE POPULATION. UNFORTUNATELY, SYMPTOMS OF THESE CONDITIONS ARE NOT ALWAYS OBVIOUS AND DETECTABLE WITHOUT TESTING AND OFTEN WHEN SYMPTOMS ARE OBVIOUS, SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE TO THE BODY MAY HAVE ALREADY OCCURRED. FOR OTHERS, THE NUTRIENT-DENSITY OF GRAINS SIMPLY DOES NOT COMPARE TO RICHER FOODS SUCH AS VEGETABLES AND INCIDENTALLY CREATE CHALLENGES WITH BLOOD SUGAR BALANCE. WHETHER YOU CHOOSE A GLUTEN/GRAIN FREE DIET BY CHOICE OR BECAUSE IT IS NECESSARY FOR YOU TO REMAIN IN CONSTANT HEALTH, IT IS MY BELIEF THAT THOSE ATHLETES WHO CHOOSE TO ELIMINATE GRAINS STAND TO BENEFIT GREATLY BY LOOKING TO RICHER, HIGHER NUTRIENT DENSITY FOODS TO DELIVER ALL OF WHAT THEIR BODIES TRULY NEED. FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT WISH TO ELIMINATE GRAINS ALTOGETHER, KEEP YOUR SERVINGS MODEST AND LIMITED.

SOY – FOR MOST ATHLETES, ESPECIALLY MALES, SOY AND PROCESSED BY-PRODUCTS OF SOY SHOULD BE AVOIDED. OF MAJOR SIGNIFICANCE, PHYTOESTROGENS A FORM OF THE FEMALE DOMINANT HORMONES CAN DISRUPT THE NATURAL AND PROPER BALANCE OF THE SEX HORMONES IN EITHER GENDER. SOY CONTAINS A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF THE ANTI-NURIENT PHYTATES. PHYTATES (PHYTIC ACID) ARE SUBSTANCES THAT HAVE A PROPENSITY TO BOND TO IRON, ZINC, CALCIUM, AND MAGNESIUM IN OUR BODIES. THESE, NOT SO COINCIDENTALLY, ARE RATHER COMMON NUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES. INCIDENTALLY, SOY POSSESSES A NUMBER OF OTHER CHEMICALS SUCH AS GROWTH INHIBITORS, BLOOD CLOTTING AGENTS, AND IS MOSTLY GENETICALLY MODIFIED WHICH ARE ALL REASONS ATHLETES SHOULD MOSTLY, IF NOT COMPLETELY KEEP IT OUT OF THEIR DIETS.

EXPELLER PRESSED OILS – OFTEN DERIVED FROM GRAINS, SOY AND NUTS, THESE OILS HAVE A NET NEGATIVE EFFECT ON THE BODY. THEY ARE HIGH IN OMEGA-6 (PRO-INFLAMMATROY) COMPOUNDS WHICH CREATE A DISPROPORTIONATE BALANCE IN THE BODY AND POSSIBLY PROLONG THE RECOVERY PROCESS FOR ATHLETES. GOOD FATS ARE ESSENTIAL FOR ATHLETES, THOUGH, SO FOCUS ON QUALITY SOURCES OF FAT SUCH AS COCONUT OIL, OLIVE OIL, AND PALM OIL.

GOOD DIETS WILL MOST CERTAINLY CONTAIN SOME ANTI-NUTRIENTS, HOWEVER THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOU WILL BE IN A NUTRIENT-DEFICIENT STATE FOR INCLUDING THEM. AVOIDING CERTAIN FOODS WHICH ARE MORE DELETERIOUS THAN HEALTHIER OPTIONS IS A SMART STRATEGY FOR ATHLETES TO CONSIDER IN THEIR PROGRAMMING. THE BODY AIMS FOR BALANCE SO IF YOU DO OPT FOR LESSER QUALITY OPTIONS BE SURE TO OFFSET THIS WITH AN ACTION OR ITEM THAT WILL HELP KEEP BALANCE INTACT.
